SOME COMMON CHARACTERISTICS OF SEX ADDICTION:
- Using sexual thoughts and behaviors as primary coping methods.
- Using sexual arousal as the drug of choice
- Having pattern of compulsive, out of control sexual behaviors: behavior is either illegal, illicit or believed to be “bad”.
- Experiencing harmful consequences to others and ourselves due to sexual behaviors.
- Preoccupied with sex and sexual fantasies.
- Progressing to more out-of-control as tolerance increases.
- Having periods of control or strict abstinence.
- Trying to control behaviors while continuing sexual obsessions.
- Experiencing depression and/or having suicidal thoughts.
- Having a family history of sexual shame, addiction, or abuse.
- Victims of childhood sexual, physical and/or emotional abuse.
- Ritualizing sexual behaviors.
- Associating excitement and risk with sex.
- Confusing sex with needs for affection.
- Difficulty getting emotionally close to others.
Any of these factors could indicate sexual addiction, but the more you have the more likely you need to seek professional help.
