SOME COMMON CHARACTERISTICS OF SEX ADDICTION:

• Using sexual thoughts and behaviors as primary coping methods.
• Using sexual arousal as the drug of choice
• Having pattern of compulsive, out of control sexual behaviors: behavior is either illegal, illicit or believed to be “bad”.
• Experiencing harmful consequences to others and ourselves due to sexual behaviors.
• Preoccupied with sex and sexual fantasies.
• Progressing to more out-of-control as tolerance increases.
• Having periods of control or strict abstinence.
• Trying to control behaviors while continuing sexual obsessions.
• Experiencing depression and/or having suicidal thoughts.
• Having a family history of sexual shame, addiction, or abuse.
• Victims of childhood sexual, physical and/or emotional abuse.
• Ritualizing sexual behaviors.
• Associating excitement and risk with sex.
• Confusing sex with needs for affection.
• Difficulty getting emotionally close to others.

Any of these factors could indicate sexual addiction, but the more you have the more likely you need to seek professional help.
