SEXUAL THERAPY BEGINS WITH LOTS OF QUESTIONS
The first thing a sex therapist does is an evaluation. That means the therapist asks a lot of questions to help determine what the problem areas are before coming up with a treatment plan.
Remember, no sexual touching or sexual activity
is ever done in a reputable therapist’s office.
Here are some of the more common things that might be asked in a sexual evaluation. Obviously this will be somewhat different from person to person because of their individual differences or problem areas:
- How and when did the problem start?
- What’s happening (if anything) now sexually?
- Sexual History
- How you (nonsexual) relationships are with your partner, family, job, friends, etc.
- Medical and medicine history
- Fertility history
- History of counseling
- Religious history
- Education
- Body Image
- Recreational history
- Occupational pursuits
- Drug, alcohol and cigarette use
- Smoking history
- Military and/or work history
Sexual problems most often are not due to only one thing. They are usually caused by several factors. Most people do not realize that so many things can affect sexuality and are surprised at the variety of questions they’re asked.
A thorough evaluation means that all areas that might affect the situation are explored. After the evaluation, the therapist shares what she/he has learned and treatment goals can be set.
