Yes there are. Approximately 10 to 20 percent of new mothers suffer depression during the first year after giving birth. The following factors make it more likely that you will develop postpartum depression:
- A family or personal history of depression, anxiety, manic depression, or postpartum depression.
- A history of severe PMS.
- A baby who is sick or colicky.
- Physical complications during pregnancy or childbirth.
- A history of thyroid imbalance.
- Unrealistic postpartum expectations.
- Lack of support from your spouse, family, or friends.
Alert your medical practitioner with any concerns you have during or after a pregnancy.
